It proved to be second time’s the charm for Jianfeng Sun in the APT Jeju 2026 Main Event, with the Chinese player converting his start-of-day chip lead into a maiden APT title and taking the lion’s share of the massive KRW 3,207,600,000 (~USD 2,393,730) prize pool—the third-richest ever generated by the tour in South Korea (second if going by USD conversion rates).

Just eight players returned for the Final Day from the 1,375-entry field—the ninth-largest non-Championship field in tour history and fourth-largest ever held in South Korea. All eight were guaranteed at least KRW 53,230,000 (~USD 39,725), with Sun carrying an 18 big blind advantage over his nearest challenger, Singapore’s Steve Ng.

Sun had previously come within touching distance of the award-winning Gold Lion trophy two years ago, finishing runner-up to compatriot Xixiang Luo in the APT Jeju 2024 Main Event.

“Over the past two years, I’ve played in many tournaments, so that past loss didn't actually leave a deep impression on me. Back then, I entered heads-up with a very short stack—a 1-to-5 chip ratio—so I didn't feel it was much of a regret to lose,” Sun reflected in his post-match interview.

The 34-year-old tournament professional refused to let history repeat itself. After battling back from a 3:2 chip deficit against Ng during heads-up play, Sun sealed the deal to claim a career-best KRW 427,565,000 (~USD 319,080) top prize.

Prior to the final duel, the remaining duo negotiated a deal that secured Ng a personal-best score of KRW 449,115,000 (~USD 335,160), leaving the title, trophy, and an additional KRW 23,600,000 (~USD 17,610) to fight for.

Entering the final table as chip leader provided an immediate boost and set the tone for Sun’s redemption run, cemented by an early knockout blow against eighth place finisher Shuang Qiu:

“This time, I really wanted to win, especially since I entered the Final Table as the chip leader. On the very first hand, when my AK eliminated KK, I felt like luck was on my side today... I feel I’ve made progress over the past two years, especially in my mindset and with table dynamics,” said Sun.

Sun and Ng dominated proceedings throughout the final table, accounting for five of the seven eliminations. While Ng claimed four knockouts and enjoyed a stint in the chip lead, Sun scored the crucial first and last eliminations of the day.

“I was very confident in my heads-up play because a few months ago, I was constantly playing heads-up matches against [high stakes professional] Xu Yang. Throughout the process, I could feel momentum shifting in my direction,” Sun added.

Dedicating his triumph to his family, Sun closed out a commanding performance to officially etch his name onto the APT Main Event trophy.

Third place finisher Kwang Chung Tan of Singapore was another to earn a career high score, banking KRW 225,180,000 (~USD 168,045) for his podium place – nine times larger than his previous best results.

The top three finishers also received a USD 10,000 (~KRW 13.4M) seat to November’s USD 5 million guaranteed APT Championship Main Event.

While inaugural APT Championship High Roller winner Toby Joyce will be disappointed to have been unable to further add to his legacy by becoming the first player to claim an APT Main Event Mega Lion and a Championship title, the Irish professional did lock up KRW 166,770,000 (~USD 124,455) for his fourth place finish, which moves him into the top three on the Ireland All-Time Money List.

Outside of the top three, both fifth place finalist Weimin Chen, and sixth place finalist Jiawei Wan were two more to cash for career-best results, while seventh place finisher Erdun Xu, and eighth place finisher Shuang Qiu both cashed for their second largest scores.
