Korea National Cup Sets New Tour Country Record

#2 Flight A chip leader Min Sung Lee 2.jpg Austria’s Min Sung Lee leads the APT’s largest-ever Korean-based opening event

The opening event of the APT’s sixth Incheon-based festival has gotten the tournament action off to the best of starts with the KRW 700,000 (~USD 500) Korea National Cup setting a new tour country record for both entries and prize pool over the three opening flights.

The KRW 100 million (~USD 71,000) guarantee was easily surpassed on the opening Flight A, which got underway at 11am local time (KST) and attracted 260 entries.

Flight B drew a further 277 entries, with the Turbo Flight C pulling in an additional 170 entries to bring the total number of entries up to 707 (461 unique), surpassing the tour record for the APT’s largest Korean-based opening event set during the APT Jeju 2024.

This generated a hefty KRW 408,304,378 (~USD 293,112) prize pool, making it the richest ever Korean-based opening event in tour history, and the fourth-richest opening event the APT has ever run, with the eventual champion walking away with a sizable KRW 78,084,378 (~USD 56,055) top prize.

With only the top 14 percent of each flight making the Final Day, competition for a place in the paying positions was fiercely contested.

A total of 100 players fought their way through, guaranteeing themselves a payday of at least KRW 1,110,000 (~USD 800).

Flight A got the festival action underway at 11am local time with the action playing out over eighteen 25-minute levels.

It was Austria’s Min Sung Lee topping the chip counts of the opening flight, bagging up a stack of 605,000; Lee was the only player from all three flights to finish with a stack of over 600,000.

Japan’s Youji Lee concluded the action second in the Flight A pecking order with a stack of 515,000, with New Zealand’s Tae Hoon Han rounding out the top three with a stack of 448,000, with a total of 37 players fighting their way through to the Final Day and a place in the paying positions.

A further 39 players made it through from Flight B, with Japan’s Taisei Ueda leading the second of the three starting flights, concluding the twenty-one 20-minute levels played with a stack of 522,000, which puts him second in the overall counts coming into the Final Day.

Compatriot Kobayashi Shuhei bagged the second largest Flight B stack of 511,000, with Russia’s Gleb Ershov rounding out the top three Flight B stacks with 484,000 in chips.

All tournament information can be found on the Korea National Cup - Flight B tournament page.

01 Turbo Flight C chip leader Hao Chen-1 (1).jpg China’s Hao Chen topped the Turbo Flight C chip counts

Just 24 of the 170 Turbo Flight C entries were able to circumnavigate the tournament minefield and find a chip bag at the end of the evening’s play.

It was Hao Chen closing out the twenty-one 15-minute levels played with a stack of 510,000 and the Chinese player will be returning for the Final Day third in the overall chip counts.

Hao was the only Flight C player to crack the half a million chip barrier, with fellow countryman Xiaohui Wang finishing the action some way behind on a stack of 425,000, with Japan’s Kyota Henzan (336,000) rounding out the top three stacks of the final flight.
