Taiwan's Li Wei Sun Leads Final 40 Players in APT Taipei Main Event

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, March 7, 2024 – Playing out at the tournament tables of the Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Club (CTP) Asia Poker Arena, the APT Taipei 2024 TWD 70,000 Main Event has reached the business end of the tournament.

Just 40 players out of a sizable field of 1,182 remain in contention for the award-winning 24K Gold Lion APT Taipei Main Event Trophy and the TWD 12,944,020 (~$409,730) top prize – the largest in Taiwanese poker history.

A total of 175 players returned to action for Day 3, all guaranteed a TWD 111,000 (~USD 3,510) share of the record TWD 72,232,020 (~$2,286,275) prize pool – the richest ever generated in the country.

Close to six 60-minute levels later, 135 players had hit the rail. Notables to fall included: Taiwan's Chen An Lin (110th for TWD 139,000), Austria's Max Neugebauer (80th for TWD 155,000), New Zealand's Thomas Ward (75th for TWD 155,000), South Korea's Yohwan "BoxeR" Lim (52nd for 222,000), former APT Main Event champion Renniel Galvez (49th for 222,000), and Hong Kong's Chun Nam Fung (41st for TWD 222,000), with the latters' elimination concluding the action for the day.

It is local Li Wei Sun who leads the field after finding himself on the right side of a brutal set over set confrontation against Hayato Obana that saw the Japanese player hit the rail and Sun shoot to the top of the chip counts, bagging up 3,465,000.

France's Safwane Bahri finished second in the counts for the second day in a row, bagging up 3,175,000 and was the only other player to hit over 3 million in chips.

Day 2 frontrunner Jei "Brandon" Lee rounds out the top three, concluding play with 2,510,000 in chips.

Both former two-time APT Main Event champions Lester Edoc and Mike Takayama kept their dreams of a record third APT Main Event title alive; Edoc bagging the fourth biggest stack, and Takayama the seventeenth largest.

Singapore's Jereld Sam also remained amongst the big stacks, and both Sam and Thailand's Pitipong Posri shared the #5 spot after bagging 2,105,000 apiece.

Flight B frontrunner Jun Obara (1,675,000) also bagged a top ten stack, as did Malaysian bracelet winner Junzhong Loo (1,510,000), with the top ten as follows:

Other notables left in contention include Vietnamese bracelet winner ** Quang Thai Ha** (1,730,000), Japan's Daisuke Ogita (1,300,000), the Philippines' David Erquiaga (1,295,000), Australia's John "Burt" Perry (830,000), triple bracelet winner Yan Shing "Anson" Tsang (680,000), and former APT Main Event champion Dicky Tsang (565,000).

Australia's Christopher Tran leads the richest-ever Zodiac Classic

The TWD 80,000 Event #83: Zodiac Classic - Sponsored by Natural8 - TWD 20,000,000 GTD proved to be the most popular draw of the day, with 320 entries (232 unique) entering the tournament arena as the thirteen 40-minute levels played out.

This generated a juicy TWD 22,348,800 (~USD 709,400) prize pool, surpassing the TWD 20 million guarantee and setting a new APT prize pool record for the tournament.

The eventual winner will walk away with a TWD 4,362,800 (~USD 138,495) top prize – also a record for this event.

It is Christopher Tran who will be returning in pole position after bagging up a stack of 437,000, with the Australian the only player to conclude play with a stack over 400K.

Japan's Takeshi Takahashi (361,000) and South Korea's Younghee Park (336,500) round out the top three stacks, with the latter looking to defend his APT Taipei 2023 Zodiac Classic title.

with a total of 111 players making the cut for Day 2, with the top ten stacks as follows:

Other notables still in the running include the USA's Tony Miles (196,500), Taiwan's #2 ranked tournament player Yen-Han "Pete" Chen (174,500), Natural8 ambassadors Yu Chung "Nevan" Chang (155,000), and Phachara Wongwichit (68,000), four-time bracelet winner Bradley Ruben (64,500) and plenty more besides.

Italy's Giuseppe Murabito Wins Inaugural Event #81: NL Hold'em Heads Up

Italy's Giuseppe Murabito claimed his maiden APT title in the inaugural NL Hold'em Heads Up

A brand new addition to the schedule, the TWD 20,000 Event #81: NL Hold'em Heads Up (32 Cap) Each Round Best of 3 made the cap for the event, drawing the full 32 entries and generating a 558,720 (~USD 17,735) prize pool.

It was Italy's Giuseppe Murabito who claimed the honor of becoming the first new era APT heads-up champion, defeating Japan's Mayuko Morita in the final best of three to bank a TWD 234,720 (~USD 7,455) top prize, claiming his maiden APT title and denying Morita her second of the series.

Morita made TWD 156,000 (~USD 4,955) for her runner-up finish, with compatriot Shoichiro Tamaki collecting TWD 84,000 (~USD 2,670) for third place.

Singapore's Alecz Chan was the only other player to make the money, also receiving TWD 84,000 (~USD 2,670) for fourth place.
