HANOI, VIETNAM, May 26, 2023 – Welcome to the summer of shove and the first of the APT Summer Series festivals, with the APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 getting underway at the tournament tables of the Grand Loyal Poker Club, located on the second and third floors of the luxurious Grand Vista Hanoi Hotel.
This marks the third time the Asian Poker Tour has visited Hanoi and is the second Series APT has held at the Grand Loyal venue.
It was India's Shardul Parthasarathi who emerged victorious the last time around, defeating a 471-strong field in the VND 22-million Main Event during the June APT Vietnam Hanoi Loyal 2022 to claim the lion's share of the VND 9,137,400,000 (USD $394,401) prize pool, taking home the VND 1,929,250,000 (USD $83,273) top prize in addition to the trophy and title.
With the APT Kickoff kickstarting the Series action and drawing 287 entries (192 unique) – which you can read about in more detail below – the APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 looks primed to post some solid numbers over the next ten days.
Running May 26 to June 4, the 10-day, 44-trophy Event Series boasts VND 24-billion (~USD $1,000,000) in guaranteed prize money, with the highlight of the action-packed poker series the VND 35-million (~USD $1,500) buy-in Main Event with its VND 12-billion (~USD $500,000) prize pool guarantee. Kickoff Kickstarts Series Action With 287 Entries and VND 1.75BN (~$75K) Prize Pool; Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum Hunting Third APT Title
Thailand's Kiwanont Sukham is on the hunt for a third APT title after topping the APT Kickoff chip counts
The Summer Series action kicked off with the VND 7,000,000 Event #1 APT Kickoff, with the opening Flight A getting underway at 12pm local time on the third floor of the Grand Loyal Poker Club and drawing 179 entries with the action playing out over seventeen 30-minute levels.
The second starting Flight B kicked off at a slightly later 6pm on the second floor and saw a further 108 players compete over eighteen 20-minute levels.
This brought the total number of entries up to 287 (192 unique), generating a VND 1,753,857,000 (~USD $75,400) prize pool.
With the top 14 percent of the field from each respective starting flight making Day 2 and the money, a total of 26 players made the cut from Flight A, with a further 16 making it through from Flight B.
The 42 combined survivors will return for the second and final Day 2 all guaranteed a payout of at least VND 10,280,000 (~USD $440), but it is the VND 353,007,000 (~USD $15,180 top prize and the trophy and title all will be aiming for.
The man best positioned to take that honor is no stranger to success at the APT; Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum following up his career-best score in April's record APT Taipei Event #6 Mystery Bounty Hunter by bagging the overall chip lead after topping the Flight A chip counts with a stack of 669,000.
Sukhum was the only player out of the two starting flights to break the 600K chip mark, with the next closest rival – Malaysia's Liaw Kim Tsang – bagging up a stack of 543,000, putting him second in the overall counts coming into Day 2.
Vietnam's Hoang Thinh (441,000) rounded out the top three Flight A stacks, with the top ten as follows:

Malaysia's Shung Er Sua bagged biggest on Flight B of the APT Kickoff
It was Malaysia's Shung Er Sua the man to bag biggest on Flight B, concluding play with a stack of 500,000 which puts him third in the overall counts coming into Day 2.
China's Yucheng Xiao (377,000), and Vietnam's Nguyen Duc Cuong (330,000) rounded out the top three Flight B stacks and will be returning fifth and ninth respectively in the Day 2 chip counts, with the top ten Flight B stacks as follows:

The 42 survivors will unite for the first time for the second and final day, which plays out at 12pm local time on Saturday, May 27, and the tournament will play down to a champion.
Sweden's Daniel Brugman First in & Last Out in Single Day High Roller – 8 Max for VND 581M (~USD $25K)
Sweden's Daniel Brugman claims maiden APT title in Event #2 Single Day High Roller – 8 Max
The VND 60M Event #2 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max got off to a slow start, with the action getting underway a little later than the scheduled 12:30pm start time, kicking off at around 2:30pm local time.
The action got underway on level 5 with the Netherlands' Martijn Gerrits and Sweden's Daniel Brugman battling two-handed in an attempt to spark the tournament into life.
A level later and the field was up to two tables, with poker luminaries such as Lester Edoc, India's Kunal Patni, Nishant Sharma, and Ashish Munot, South Korea's Dongkyu Kim and Malta's Remi Florent just some of the players to join the action.
By the time registration closed, the field had climbed to 30 entries (23 unique) and generated a VND 1,571,400,000 (~USD $67,570) prize pool.
Of the aforementioned players, only Brugman, Sharma, Dongkyu, and Remi were able to make the final table, but with only the top five places paying out, four finalists would be departing empty-handed.
It took three 30-minute levels to burst the bubble following the departure of Japan's Taku Tanaka in seventh place.
It was India's **Nishant Sharma **departing in poker's most unenviable position after moving all-in preflop midway through level 18 with king-jack and running into the pocket queens of China's Kang Chen, who promptly flopped a set to guarantee all five remaining finalists a VND 149,280,000 (~USD $6,420) payday.
It was Sweden's Daniel Brugman the man to claim the VND 581,420,000 (~USD $25,000) top prize, making him the first man in and last man out.
Brugman bested South Korea's Dongkyu Kim after a short heads-up confrontation that lasted less than half a level to deny Kim his maiden APT title while claiming his own.
Kim collected VND 400,710,000 (~USD $17,215) for his runner-up finish, with the tournament paying out as follows:
